Understand
Why It Works.

Martial Arts Concepts is dedicated to understanding the principles that make martial arts work—and teaching students to apply those principles beyond memorized technique.

01 — WHAT IS M.A.C.?

Martial arts are more than collections of techniques.

Every martial art contains techniques. But techniques are expressions of deeper principles.

M.A.C. focuses on the concepts underneath them—position, timing, structure, movement, leverage, pressure, perception, and human reaction.

When students understand why something works, they are no longer limited to reproducing what an instructor showed them.

They learn to solve problems.

02 — THE M.A.C. APPROACH

Understand Apply Adapt

01

Understand

Learn the principles behind effective movement, position, structure, and force.

02

Apply

Explore those principles through purposeful training rather than isolated choreography.

03

Adapt

Recognize changing problems and develop appropriate solutions instead of searching for a memorized answer.

Technique becomes a product of understanding.
03 — CORE IDEAS

Concepts, not collections.

These are only a few examples of the principles explored in M.A.C. No concept exists in isolation: position affects movement, movement changes structure, and structure changes how force can be received, redirected, or generated.

Centerline

Understand position, access, and the most direct lines between you and the threat.

Triangular Footwork

Use angles and positioning instead of remaining directly in the path of incoming force.

80/20

80/20 Positioning

Create a useful balance of stability, mobility, and structural advantage.

Shearing

Use opposing lines of force to disrupt structure, redirect movement, and create openings.

04 — OUR ROOTS

Built on experience.
Informed by tradition.
Open to evolution.

Founder Brian Jacobs began training in martial arts at age nine. His approach grew through decades of training, teaching, questioning, and practical experience, with deep roots in Serrada Escrima and a major influence from Bob Orlando and Kun Tao Silat.

M.A.C. respects the arts and teachers that shaped it without treating lineage, rank, or tradition as substitutes for understanding and ability. Principles should be tested, questioned, understood, and adapted.

05 — OUR FOUNDATION

THE TECHNICAL BASE

Combat Serrada Escrima

Serrada is the technical foundation from which much of M.A.C. developed, and it remains an important framework for exploring position, timing, movement, structure, and force.

But you do not need to practice Serrada to use M.A.C.

YOUR ART + M.A.C.

Don't start over.
Build on what you already know.

Martial Arts Concepts is not another style you have to collect. Its principles are intended to augment—or supercharge—the training you already have.

Whether your background is in Filipino martial arts, boxing, karate, grappling, kickboxing, or another system, M.A.C. gives you a way to examine what you already know through position, structure, timing, movement, leverage, pressure, perception, and adaptability.

The goal isn't to replace your martial art.
It's to make what you already know work better.

06 — INSTRUCTORS

The people behind M.A.C.

A growing organization built around thoughtful instruction, practical training, and shared principles.
